Ciao, adventure seekers!

If you’re dreaming of a hiking adventure that combines breathtaking views, rich history, and Italian charm, the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) on the Amalfi Coast is a must-visit. This iconic trail, stretching between the towns of Bomerano and Nocelle, offers some of the most stunning vistas in all of Italy and is often named one of the World's Most Beautiful Hikes! If you're looking to add this hike to your Bucket List while visiting Italy, let Epic Horizons Travel guide you through this unforgettable experience.

An Overview of the Path of the Gods

The Path of the Gods is a 6.5-kilometer (about 4 miles) trail that winds high along the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. The trail gets its name from its divine views and mythical origins, believed to have been used by the gods themselves in classical mythology. Hiking this path will take you through lush forests, terraced vineyards, and picturesque villages, all while offering panoramic views of the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea.

Starting Your Journey in Bomerano

Your adventure begins in the charming village of Bomerano after a harrowing bus ride high along the cliffs. The trailhead is well-marked, and from the moment you set off, you’ll be treated to spectacular scenery. The trail is mostly flat at the beginning, allowing you to ease into the hike while taking in the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Highlights Along the Trail

  1. Stunning Views: As you hike, you’ll be captivated by the views of the coast, with its dramatic cliffs plunging into the turquoise sea. On a clear day, you can see as far as the island of Capri.

  2. Historical Sites: The path is dotted with remnants of ancient structures, giving you a glimpse into the rich history of the region. Look out for old farmhouses and abandoned stone huts that tell stories of the past.

  3. Flora and Fauna: The trail is home to diverse flora and fauna. Depending on the season, you might see wildflowers, fragrant herbs, and even wildlife such as lizards and birds.

  4. Shepherds and Goats: Don’t be surprised if you encounter local shepherds with their goats along the way, or even a donkey delivering supplies to the homes high up on the cliffs. This traditional way of life adds to the rustic charm of the hike.

Reaching Nocelle

After about 3-4 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the village of Nocelle, perched high above the town of Positano. Nocelle is a peaceful village with narrow streets and stunning viewpoints. From here, you can choose to descend to Positano via a long staircase (about 1,500 steps) or catch a bus down to the town.

Tips for Hiking the Path of the Gods

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: The trail is rocky in parts, so sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.

  • Bring Water and Snacks: There are few places to refill water along the trail, so bring enough to stay hydrated. You'll also come across a lemonade stand where you can stop for a treat made from the famous Amalfi lemons and use the restroom.

  • Start Early: To avoid the heat and crowds, start your hike early in the morning.

  • Check the Weather: The trail can be dangerous in wet or foggy conditions, so always check the forecast before setting out.

  • Respect Nature: Stick to the marked paths, do not litter, and respect the natural environment.
